i dont really go for branded computers. i know that most americans do. but to get the most out of your buck. why not assemble your own or let someone do it for you. it is how most pc's in asia are bought.
browse intel.com for a motherboard and processor, that is within your budget. then go to kingston.com to know what type of ram you need. then shop online, use pricegrabber.com or amazon.com to source and buy your parts. here in asia, i usually buy my parts from a store, they source it and they assemble it for me; for a price of course. sometimes, i also buy some parts from the usa, and ship them here to be assembled into my pc.
it is much less expensive, and you will stretch you money to have the best pc you can buy. it just take you a little time to read and know what you need.
but if you like to stick to branded. i dont like dell, bec dell has issues regarding its warranty, read the fine print. you may need to keep the proof of purchase, process the warranty card/ register, and know what is included in the warranty and for how long is it offered. and also know where are their repair centers/ numbers!
hp, the other cheap pc. my problem with is the company usually sell on sale items which they like phase out. the reason behind this is that the items usually have some sort of unsolvable glitches or driver issues with windows. do your research regarding these in forums on the internet. sometimes they are posted in the hp's website.
i think i am biased towards sony vaio. bec they are sleek, stylish and very convenient to use and reformat/ do recovery is easy. What Would Be The Best Dell Computer For Home Use?4 Gb is a bit much nowdays..but i guess it will be regular after a few years or months. So it's kinda ok :D
