I'm vigorously searching for a new laptop, and I've come down to 2 choices: the Toshiba Satellite %26amp; the Dell Studio. Which is better? Is the Dell Studio better or worse than the Toshiba Satellite?Just this week I purchased a Toshiba Satellite A205-S5871 for my daughter. I think we are going to return it. The Toshiba cooling fan comes on full blast (loud) for a second or two every 10-15 seconds and then slows to a slower speed. I was able to check the CPU temps using a utility program and they are not abnormally high. The laptop is on a flat table and the air vents are not obstructed. The constant cycling of the cooling fan to high speed is very annoying. I searched the web and was unable to come up with a solution (fan control). Toshiba support was useless (Indian or some other none native English speaker). In my web search I found another Toshiba purchaser complaining about the same issue on a different $1500 Toshiba model. We paid only $450 at Fry's for this model (new, not refurb). I've noticed at times, just opening another window in Vista causes the cooling fan to boost to high speed for a second or two. Very peculiar. I have a Dell Latitude D620 from work and it's great. The cooling fan on the Dell runs at a constant low (and quiet) speed unless I really stress both CPU cores by running Folding @ Home. I'm really disappointed with the Toshiba. The fan cycling high and low so often leads me to believe the fan will wear out prematurely requiring a repair. So, the Toshiba is going back. Frankly I don't know what brand we'll try next. I don't know if the Dell's in the same price range are any good or not. Is the Dell Studio better or worse than the Toshiba Satellite?Never dealt with Toshiba, but ANYTHING is better than a Dell. That guy that used to say "Dude, you got a dell!" really meant "Dude (disappointed face), you got a Dell??? (look of disgust).
Whatever it is... just make sure it fits your price range and is powerful enough to do what you want it to do. After that, everything else is secondary.
