Ive used a mac for 10+ years now, but my new job is making me use a computer that is a Dell. This is making me a bit nervous, ill be using it to enter data on spreadsheets. Thats not my whole job but its a big part of it. What should I do? Are there any books on how to use dellS?How do I switch from my mac to a dell?Of course there are books for beginner PC users. Check Amazon.com. Look for books for beginner PC users. What you need to do is to familiarize yourself with the operating system itself so you know how to navigate around. The most important change you will make in understanding the fundamental difference between PC and MAC is that Mac has a different file system and way of saving files and retrieving them from PC's. I use Linux quite a bit which is a lot like Mac O/S...
So what you need to know first is how to use Windows EXPLORER, NOT Internet Explorer, but Windows Explorer, which essentially, is a File Manager Interface. NTFS is the file system type on PC's, unlike Mac/Linux which is a journaled file system.
Each device on a PC is given a LETTER of the alphabet instead of the typical Linux device names such as sda0, sda1, etc.
Your main drive, the primary hard disk (euqivalent to your HOME in Mac), is C drive. This is the drive where the boot partition resides and from where the computer is booted. The operating system is always installed on C drive, and the operating system files are found under the C:\Windows pathway. Unlike Mac and Linux, where the operating system files may be stored under a number of different sub-directories, in Windows, they are all stored either at the Root Directory (C: , itself) or under C:\Windows.
Each user has their own set of desktop icons and desktop features, set by the user...and it is given a name, which is assigned when you create an ACCOUNT. The first account, which is installed with the operating system is the ADMINISTRATIVE account, giving you access and rights to all features on the machine. For a work computer, you will be given an account which is a CLIENT account on the network. So if your name is BILL, you should see something like:
C:\Users\Bill...for Vista and Windows 7
And its a bit different for XP
Here is a good tutorial on line to get you started:

So then, familiarize yourself with the file system and how to save, retrieve, name, rename, move, copy, cut, paste files and you should have a good handle on things. How do I switch from my mac to a dell?
