How come I cannot change the BIOS on my Dell Inspiron 1545?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop, and was told i could help increase it's performance by changing settings in the teBIOS before startup. I pressed f12, scrolled down to BIOS and clicked it. All it gave me was a menu showing me a whole slew of data but was read-only. I could only change things like the date/time. Can someone tell me how i can change things like shared memory on my specific model?How come I cannot change the BIOS on my Dell Inspiron 1545?Some data is read only but usually there are many pages and the read only data is primarily on the first page.
